WEEK #4: Cubbies take the broom to LA

Almost the first MLB game I ever saw. That was the Dodgers at Wrigley Field in 1971.

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 1) -- Ron Santo
(4-for-6) and almost all of his Cub teammates quickly showed they did not regard Dodger Stadium as a pitcher's park. Chicago sent 10 men to the plate in the T1, scoring 5 runs on 7 hits. This all led to a 9-5 win with 17 Cubbies hits. Five Cubs hitters had multi-hit games including 2 from starting pitcher Fergie Jenkins (2-1). On the hill, Jenkins went 7.2 innings for the win. Bill Russell and Bill Buckner led the Bums with 3 base knocks apiece.

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 2) -- Rookie Rick Reuschel (1-0) and Don Sutton (3-1) engaged in a nice pitcher's duel. LA struck first when Manny Mota singled in Steve Yeager in the 6th. Jim Hickman's (1) 2-run blast in the T7 quickly gave the lead back to Chicago. It remained 2-1 until the T9 when Billy Williams (2) smacked a 2-run homer and Santo scored on a wild pitch. The final was Chicago 5, LA 1. Reuschel went the distance, scattering 5 hits.

CHICAGO (Sept. 3) -- Billy Williams (3) cranked out a 3-run blast in the 1st to highlight a 4-run opener for the Cubbies. They added 2 more in the 2nd and never looked back in a 9-0 whitewashing of the visitors from the Left Coast. Bill Hands (2-1) was in complete control on the bump for Chicago, pitching a 2-hit shutout. Jose Cardenal chipped in 3 hits to the Cubs' offensive cause.

CHICAGO (Sept. 4) -- Burt Hooton (3-1) became the second Cubs rookie hurler to stifle the Dodgers this series as Hooton twirled 7 strong innings in a 9-3 Cubs win. Ken Rudolph (1) and Williams drove in 3 runs each for Chicago.

A very unlikely sweep for the Cubbies. Thanks to Marc for playing this one early in the week.
