Re: KOD35 - Week 3 League File - 1987 Montreal vs. 1973 San Francisco

The Giants evened their record to 6-6 with a 3-1 series win over Montreal.

Aug 27 - Floyd Youmans vs. Ron Bryant
Bobby Bonds led off the bottom of the 1st with a home run to give the Giants a quick 1-0 lead.  In the 2nd, Tim Wallach doubled, Mitch Webster homered and the Expos moved ahead 2-1.  Youmans and Bryant stayed locked in until the 5th.  Youmans' control started to depart as he walked Dave Rader, Bobby Bonds, and then loaded the bases when Tito Fuentes singled to center.  Garry Maddox drew the 3rd walk of the inning to tie the game at 2-2.  Willie McCovey hit what looked like an inning-ending DP grounder, but he some how beat the relay to put the Giants up 3-2.  From here Bryant got tough and benefited from two DP grounders and a caught stealing to erase any potential runs.  The Giants added an insurance run in the 8th to make the final score 4-2.

Aug 28 - Dennis Martinez vs. Tom Bradley
A extra-inning affair was settled when Gary Matthews homered in the bottom of the 13th for a 6-5 Giants win.  The Expos jumped all over Tom Bradley with 3 runs in the 1st, including a 2-run home run by Tim Wallach.  In the 4th, Expos up 3-1, Martinez faced some two-out difficulties.  He hit Bobby Bonds with a pitch, and then Bonds stole 2nd.  Tito Fuentes singled him home, 3-2.   A pair of walks followed and Ed Goodson's single plated two more to put the Giants up 4-3.  Bonds would single in another run in the 6th to make it 5-3.  Top of the 8th, a pair of Expo singles chased Bradley and brought in the SF pen.  Tim Raines doubled in PH Casey Candale, 5-4 Giants.  Andres Galarraga's sacrifice fly sent Mitch Webster home and knotted the score at 5-5...and on to extra innings!  The Expos had their chances.  Two on, one out in the 10th but Elias Sosa escaped without harm.  In the 12th, Mitch Webster was picked off first, and in the 13th Andres Galarraga doubled, Wallach walked, but the run-scoring hit never came.  Finally it all came to end end in the 13th when Mathews hit his game-winning blast off Randy St. Claire to give the Giants a 6-5 win.

Aug 29 - Jim Barr vs. Neal Heaton
This was all Expos and Neal Heaton dealt 8 innings of 5-hit ball to hold the Giants to 1 run in an 8-1 Montreal win.  Vance Law was the hitting star with a double, home run, and 3 RBI.  The Expos put the game away in the 8th with a 4-run outburst, capped off by Mitch Webster's 2-run double.

Aug 30 - Juan Marichal vs. Bob Sebra
Another classic barn-burner, won by the Giants 6-5.  Juan Marichal helped his own cause with a 2-run double in the 2nd to go up 3-0.  Mitch Webster's 3-run HR in the 4th tied the score at 3-3, and one inning later Andres Galarraga and Vance Law drove home runs to put the Expos up 5-3.  Sebra worked late into the night but ran out of gas in the 7th.  After Dave Rader drove in a run in the 6th, Garry Mathews' 2-run HR in the 7th gave the Giants a 6-5 lead.  Now it was up to Elias Sosa to go as far as he could go.  Tim Raines' 1-out double in the 9th marked the end for Sosa and brought Randy Moffitt to the mound.  Moffitt got Wallach to ground out and struck out Galarraga to preserve the win for the Giants.

A Comedy of Errors as LA boots 3 to Amazin's

Shea Stadium
GAME 1
Osteen vs Cone
NYM 6, LAD 1

Acquired for Ed Hearn in the offseason the young spot starter David Cone flirted with a no-hitter for 7 innings before Steve Garvey broke it up.  Dodgers did nothing offensively.  Light hitting SS Raffie Santana (3-4) paced the Amazin offense to victory.

GAME 2
Sutton vs Gooden
LAD 9, NYM 2

LA returned the favor as ace Don Sutton scattered 8 hits and 2 runs for the CG victory.  Fresh out of Smithers and not in mid season form, Doc Gooden struggled giving up 6 runs in 4 innings.  LA got 3 RBI's from Wes Parker and his inevitable successor Steve Garvey.  Parker's BA is now .455.

Dodger Stadium

GAME 3
Darling vs Downing
NYM 4, LAD 3

Southpaw Al Downing went the distance, but was a victim of a Garvey error.  The young man can certainly hit, but he doesn't look good at the hot corner.  Gary Carter (2-4) knocked in 2 and scored 1.  Ron Darling struggled to get through 6, but the pen (Roger McDowell/Randy Myers) held the lead for him.

GAME 4
Fernandez vs T.John
NYM 7, LAD 3

Tommy John gave up 6 runs (2 earned) in 7 innings of frustrating work as 3 Dodger errors sealed his doom.  Once again Garvey looked lost at third, but he wasn't the only culprit.  Chris Cannizzaro was weak behind the dish and aged veteran Maury Wills booted one at short.  NY stole 4 bases off of Cannizzaro.  Mex and HoJo hit homers as the Amazin's take 3 of 4 from LA

Friars and Dodgers split

GAME 1
Dodger Stadium
Hurst vs Osteen
SDP 14, LAD 6

The Friars exploded for 14 runs on 17 hits.  Luis Salazar (4-6) had 4 RBI's and scored 4 runs of his own to be the hitting star of the game.  Marvel Wynne chipped in by going 3 for 5.  Every Padre had a hit including reliver Greg Booker.

GAME 2
Whitson vs Sutton
LAD 6, SDP 3

Sutton danced with trouble and was able to stay one step ahead en route to his second win of the season with no defeats.  Willie Crawford's 3 RBI's were the difference maker as the Dodgers even the series.

GAME 3
Jack Murphy Stadium
Downing vs Rasmussen
LAD 7, SDP 3

Al Downing was in and out of trouble all night, but managed to escape with the W.  5 Dodgers had 2 hit games.  Steve Garvey and Frank Robby each recorded triples.

GAME 4
John vs Terrell
SDP 4, LAD 2

2 Dodger errors led to 2 unearned runs, which cost Tommy John the chance to wind up on the positive side of the ledger.  Salazar (3-4) paced the Friars offense and even the series.  Normally surehanded Willie Davis and Steve Garvey were the error makers.  Mark Davis pitched a spotless 9th for the save.

Cubbies and Spos split

CHICAGO (August 22) --

Joe Pepitone
(2) went the opposite direction with a Bob McClure pitch leading off the bottom of the 11th to power the Cubs to a 4-3 win. The win was also the first KOD win for Larry Waddell. Waddell is a manager in training for the Cubbies this season. Pepi belted a 2-run homer in the 4th giving Chicago a 2-0 lead. Fergie Jenkins was pitching a no-hitter until an Andres Galarraga single with 1-out in the 8th. Herm Winningham doubled in 2 in the Montreal 8th. Tim Raines' (2) solo HR in the 9th put the 'Spos up 3-2, but Jose Cardenal plated PR Billy North on a force out in the B9 to send it to extras.

CHICAGO (August 23) --
Mitch Webster, Vance Law and Hubie Brooks all had RBI in the T10 to lift Montreal to a 7-4 win in another extra-inning affair on the North Side. Tim Burke (2-1) pitched 2 perfect innings in relief to post the W.

MONTREAL (August 24) --

Neal Heaton (1-1) was lights out on the mound for the Expos over 6 IP. Montreal built a 5-0 lead. The Cubs finally nicked Heaton for 2 runs in the 7th, but in the T8, Vance Law (1) highlighted a 4-run explosion for the visitors with a 3-run bomb. 'Spos won 9-2 going away.

MONTREAL (August 25) --
Milt Pappas (1-1) yielded a RBI single to Raines in the 1st. It was his only blemish in a complete-game effort. The "Mad Greek" scattered 5 hits, while fanning 7 and walking just 1 in a 4-1 Chicago win to even the series. The Cubs scored all they needed in the 3rd when Cardenal doubled in 2 and Billy Williams doubled in Cardenal.

Motor City Kitty sweeps Bosox

Game #1: Detroit 10-Boston 9

Was a slugfest with Detroit scoring in the top of the 10th to secure a
10-9. The Tigers jumped out to a quick 6 run lead and were looking to
cruise the rest of the game with a couple of two run two run HR down
the right field line HR's from Kirk Gibson in the 2nd and a Lance
Parrish' two run HR down the left field line that put Detroit up 6-0.
But a plucky Boston team fought back and pulled with one in the 7th
but Detroit kept hitting. The game was tied in the top of the 10th 9-9
when Glenn Wilson base hit scored Lance Parrish, Aurelio Lopez
finished up for the win.

Game #2: Detroit 6, Boston 3.

This by far was the best any of my teams have played. D-Town guys
swept the series from the very capable BoSox.
Jack Morris pitched 6.2 innings of eight hit ball and out lasted the
Red Soxs 6-3. Juan Berenger finished up for a well earned save.

Game: #3: Milt Wilcox pitched an absolutely stellar game shutting out
Boston 1-0 in Fenway Park. Wilcox only gave up 2 hits over 9 innings,
only walking 2 and 6 K's.
John Wockenfuss had the GW single in the 4th inning.

Game #4: Detroit brought the brooms, they had work to do. Detroit
trailed 2-0 going into the 8th inning when Gary Wilson single with the
bases drunk drove in two runs to tie. Then in the Tigers 10th, Enos
Cabell hit a 2b to drive in Gary Wilson from first for the game
winning hit. 3-2. Grumpart wins the game in relief.

Thanks to Alan for the games and a large amount of patience.

Yanks take 3 of 4 with strong hitting against lefties

Game 1
Yankee Stadium
Palmer v Guidry

Palmer and Guidry go head to head through 6, each giving up 3 runs.  IN the top of the 7th Baltimore grabs the lead with 2 runs on three constructive singles and a fielders choice before against Guidry.  Unfortunately for the O's a tiring Jim Palmer gives up 4 in the bottom of the 7th on a Griffey RBI fielders choice, a two run home run by Don Baylor and an RBI single by Bobby Meacham.  NYY 7 BAL 5.  Baltimore adds one in the 7th, but it's too little too late as the Yanks add 2 of their own to make the final score NYY 9 AL 6.

Game 2
Yankee Stadium
Grimsley v P Niekro

The knuckleballer prevails in this one as Phil Niekro gives up only 6 hits and a single run over 6 2/3 innings while Grimsley gives up 7 runs in 7 innings but proves one important thing about these Yankees --- They sure can hit lefties, although they didn't get a large number of hits, all were very timely as the runs just piled up against the O's  as the Yankees cruised to an easy 7-1 victory.

Game 3
Memorial Stadium
Cowley v Flanagan

Continuing their hitting against lefthanders, the Yankees got 2 runs in the first two innings on Rickey Henderson and Dale Berra solo home runs against Flanagan.
Joe Cowley was nearly unhittable for the O's batters until Eddie Murray connected on a two run shot in the bottom of the 4th to tie the game at 2.  In the top of the sixth Billy Sample hits one out for the Yanks, but the score is still tied as Lee May knocks in 1 for the O's with an RBI single.  In the bottom of the 7th, three consecutive walks load the bases for the O's ahead of an Dauer RBI  6-4-3 fielders choice ( somehow the slow footed Dauer beat the throw to first) :-) To make it 4-3 O's    HONOROABLE METION:  Joe Cowley gave up only 4 Orioles hits through 7 1/3 innings to the suddenly anemic Baltimore offense.  Way to go Joe!

Game 4
Memorial Stadium
Rasmussen v Martinez

Once more the O's hitters were held in check, and the Yankee bullpen closed this one out as the Yankees take the series with a fairly easy 6-1 victory over the Orioles.

Fun series all around as Brendan had the Yankee pitchers and hitters playing at a high level.

WEEK #2: Redbirds take 3 of 4 from Jints

Game 1 -

An 11-innng thriller with Ron Bryant and Bob Gibson matching zeros for 9 innings.  The Cardinals threatened with runners on base in both the 9th and 10th innings, but broke through in the 11th.  Brock singled, stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on a ground out.  Torre was walked intentionally to set up the DP.  Ted Simmons delivered as requested, but he busted it down the line to beat the relay and plate Brock with the game winner, 1-0 St. Louis.

Game 2 -

Another extra innings game, but one of a different flavor.  The

Giants went up 4-0 against Steve Carlton through 6 innings.  Then Tom Bradley fell apart.  A walk to Hague, PH Burda singled with one down.  A fly out, 2 away, Jose Cruz to the plate.  And he unloaded, a 3-run blast to cut the lead to 4-3.  An error on Kingman allowed Torre to reach and up came yesterday's hero.  To quote the Bay City Rollers, Ted said "I don't want to be Yesterday's Hero."  His HR made him the King of St. Louis and the Cards led 5-4.  But in the 8th with Frank Linzy pitching, the Giants tied the score at 5-5 when McCovey singled and Kingman doubled him home.  Top of the 9th the Giants went up 6-5 and could have had more.  PH Thomasson singled, Bonds singled him to 3rd, and stole 2nd with no outs.  Garry Maddox' fly ball to right was deep enough to plate Thomasson with the go-ahead run.  Drabowsky regrouped to get Matthews and McCovey.  Bottom of the 9th, Joe Hague, the bane of every right handed reliever, took Randy Moffitt deep to tie the game at 6-6.  On to the 10th...Giants get a pair of 2-out singles from Fuentes and Rader.  Up steps PH Mike Phillips, the bane of almost no one.  But he ruined Chuck Taylor's day with an RBI single to put the Giants up 7-6.  Old man Don McMahon worked the bottom of the 10th to save it for the Giants, 7-6.

Game 3 -

Reggie Cleveland went 8 innings and held the Giants to 2 runs in the Cards' 6-2 win at Candlestick.  Brock and Cruz each had 2-out RBI hits in the 9th to salt away the game.  Joe Hague again homered and drove in 3.

Game 4 -

The Giants put together four walks, a single, and a sac fly to score

3 times in the 2nd and take a 3-0 lead.  For Jerry Reuss, the free pass was an issue all day - eight of them, but he only suffered the three runs.  On the other side, Juan Marichal was in 60s form, throwing a shutout through 6.  In the 7th, it fell apart.  Ted Sizemore doubled in a run, 3-1.  The Cards loaded the bases but a wild pitch from Elias Sosa and Lou Brock's 2-run single put the Cards in the lead at 4-3.  Jose Cruz followed with another hit, 5-3 St. Louis.  The Cardinals tacked on single runs in the 8th and 9th to finish with a 7-3 win and a 3-1 series win.

Thanks Joe for a fun series!

Detroit came out swinging in the top of the 1st inning as Chet Lemon hit a Palmer 1-2 pitch 378 feet to left center to post Detroit to a 1-0 lead and quieting the opening day crowd in Baltimore.  Not to be outdone, and much to the approval of the home town fans, the O's countered in their half of the inning with a 2 run shot 324 feet down the left field line. to make it 2-1 Baltimore after 1.   In the top of the 5th Enos Cabell (former Oriole) tripled and scored on a fielders choice to put Det back on top 2-1.  Detroit added another run in the 6th as John Wockenfuss took Plamer deep for a solo shot...Det 3-1.  At this point Petry was dealing and teh O's bats were shut down.  Holding a 3-1 lead with the O's down to their last at bats, the usually very good Aurelio Lopez came in for Detroit to close out the game.  Well, that was the plan, but what followed was this:  Lee May grounded out (1away), Eddie Murray single, Pat Kelly walk, pinch hitter Tony Muser grounds into a fielders choice and now it was Murray at third, Muser at first (I have no idea how Muser beat that one out - call it "Oriole Magic")  Two down.  Pinch hitters Billy Smith and Dave Skaggs walk and the score is tied at 3 on Skaggs walk.  Bases loaded, two outs and Lopz is tired.  In comes Juan Berenguer to face Baltimore lead off hitter Al Bumbry.  He its a grounder to third and Castillo boots it to allow the winning run to score.  The fans go wild and the home opener at Memoiral Stadium is a success!   Baltimore 4 Detroit 3.

Game 2
Memorial Stadium
Rudy May vs Jack Morris

Both teams put up 2 in their halves of the 1t inning (Chet Lemon drives in 2 for Detroit, Lee May does the same for Baltimore).  Baltimore takes the lead in the bottom of the 2nd on a adds a 3rd run in the bottom of the second on a Pat Kelly lead off home run.  Baltimore 3-2.  IN the Detroit half of teh 4th Chet Lemon hits a two run shot to put the Tigers back on top 4-3.  Baltimore reclaims the lead in the bottom of the 5th on a Lee May 2 run homer followed by an Eddie Murray solo home run.  Baltimore 6 Detroit 4.   Baltimore tacks on 3 more the next inning on a walk, two doubles and a fielders choice to open up the lead 9-4.  Game ends on another Pat Kelly solo shot with Baltimore winning this one 10-4  And so the series heads to Motor City.

Game 3
Tiger Stadium
Milt Wilcox vs Mike Flanagan

For the first three innings no one could get on the board, and in the fourth Ken Sigleton posted Baltimore to a 1-0 lead with his first home run of the season.  And this is when Detroit got mad and their heavy artillery started finding their mark.  In the bottom of the 6th John Wockenfuss hit a two run shot Detroit the 2-1 lead.  In the bottom of the 7th Enos Cabel  singled and Alan Trammel was intentionally walked with two down and Tippy Martinez came in to put out the fire.  Instead Chet Lemon greeted him with an RBI single.  Larry Herndon was intentionally walked and John Wockenfuss was unintentionally walked to drive in the second run on the inning.  Detroit  4-1 over Baltimore.  In the bottom of the 8th Detroit got really mad and added 5 more runs to seal the victory on the strength of 3 singles, 2 walks and a Larry Herndon 3 run home run.  Detroit wins their home opener 9-1 over the Orioles.

Game 4
Tiger Stadium
Dave Rozema vs Dennis Martinez

Rozema got the call by Detroit manager Gerald Lancaster on short rest and pitched very well indeed.   Niether team was able to get on the board through 5 innings.  IN the top of the 6th Mark Belanger walked, stole second and advanced to third on Lance Parrish's throwing error.  He eventually scored on an Al Bumbry single to make the score 1-0 Baltimore. In the top of the 8th Baltimore backup catcher Dave Skaggs hit a solo home run to provide a very valuable insurance run as Dennis Martinez continued a solid outing by keeping the Tigers off the board until giving up a triple to Lou Whitaker who scored on an Alan Trammel fielders choice to get the Orioles lead down to 1 heading into the 9th inning.  In the bottom of the ninth Martinez struck out Kirk Gibson and got Lemon to ground out.  Mark NIxon then pulled Martinez and replaced him with Martinez (Tippy that is) who got Detroit pinch hitter Johnny Grubb to ground out to third baseman Doug DeCinces.  Baltimore 2 Detroit 1

Excellent series with Gerald!  I'm glad I've played my 4 games against the Tigers cause them boys can sure hit when they get mad!  :-)

WEEK #1 - Halos take 3 of 4 from Brew Crew

Ahoy!

Douglas Zaner's 1985 California Angels are off to a strong start, taking three of four from the 1992 Milwaukee Brewers. All four games were competitive, with blasts from unexpected characters making the difference in three of the four games.

Thanks to Douglas for fitting these games in!

Game 1: Mil 8, Cal 2
Charlie Sheen was disappointed in the season opener in Anaheim. Milwaukee manufactured a run on a passed ball in the first. Bob Boone atoned for his faux-pas with a rare two-run homer in the second inning, giving California a 2-1 lead.

Milwaukee put together two big rallies in the sixth and seventh. The Brew Crew scored thrice in the sixth, and a Robin Yount grand slam put the game away in the seventh.

In spite of Robin Yount's heroics (4-5, GS, 5rbi), the Baseball Simulator 1.000 gave the game MVP to Jaime Navarro. Jaime limited the Halos to three hits and two runs (0 ER, 4BB, 3K) over eight innings to earn the win. Mike Witt took the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on 10 hits over 6 IP. Pat Clements gave up the salami in the seventh.

Game 2: Cal 4, Mil 1
Kirk McCaskill and Dick Schofield provided the 1-2 punch, sending the home team fans home happy. The Canadian McCaskill flirted with KOD history, taking a perfect game into the sixth and a no-hitter into the seventh. A Greg Vaughn solo homer in the seventh ruined the shutout and no-hitter.

Dick Schofield, known more for his defense, clubbed a three-run homer in the fourth off of Bill Wegman to open up the scoring in game two. A Doug DeCinces double scored Reggie Jackson to extend the lead to 4-0.

A Greg Vaughn homer spoiled the no-hitter and shutout in the seventh inning.

McCaskill was brilliant, limiting the Brewers to two hits and an earnie in 8 1/3 IP, earning game MVP honors. Donnie Moore shut the door for the save.

Bill Wegman went the distance for the Brew Crew in the loss.

Game 3: Cal 4, Mil 3
California pounded out 13 hits, providing just enough offense to secure the game 3 win as the series moved to Milwaukee.

Milwaukee ran themselves out the first inning, going straight to jail on two caught stealing attempts.

It stayed quiet until the fourth, when California sent seven batters to the plate, scoring two runs and taking advantage of a Milwaukee error. Doug DeCinces drove in the pair in the fourth.

Milwaukee countered with a run in the bottom half on a Paul Molitor Sac Fly, but California returned the lead to two on a Brian Downing single in the fifth. The Brewers cut the lead in half in the sixth on a Darryl Hamilton ground-out.

A Rod Carew single extended the Halos lead back to two in the eighth. Milwaukee countered with a run in the bottom half of the eighth on a Darryl Hamilton sac fly.

California had a runner walk, but did not score in the top-half of the ninth. Milwaukee threatened with a single off closer Donnie Moore in the ninth, but Moore K'd pinch-hitter Dante Bichette to seal the win for the Angels.

Ron Romanick gets the win, going 5 2/3 IP and giving up 2 ER. Chris Bosio gave up 10 hits and 3 ER over 5 2/3 in the Brewers loss. Moore collected the save and game MVP with two shutout innings.

Game 4: Cal 7, Mil 3 (10)
Jim Slaton vs. Ricky Bones suggests some fireworks could happen for the offenses. The fireworks waited until extra innings. But they were not ignited by the home team, disappointing the Milwaukee crowd.

Brian Downing kicked off scoring with a first-inning home run off Bones. California scores another one in the second courtesy of a Gary Pettis single.

Milwaukee countered with two in the fourth on a Robin Yount two-run homer. Milwaukee added another in the fifth thanks to a Franklin Stubbs single to take the lead.

Benjamin Picht entrusted the bullpen to lock down the final four innings. The best Jim Austin could do was give up the tying run on a Brian Downing ground-out in the sixth.

The Milwaukee bullpen bent, but didn't break, in the seventh and eighth, and pitched a clean ninth. California relievers pitched a clean seventh and eighth.

In the bottom of the ninth, it appeared a two-out double from BJ Surhoff would create a run-off game winner for Greg Vaughn, but Vaughn held at third. Seitzer flew out to right to end the threat.

The tenth was scoreless. In the eleventh, Doug DeCinces broke the tie with a double, scoring Reggie Jackson. Dick Schofield (game MVP) put the game away with another three-run home run off gas can Doug Henry.

Stu Cliburn earned the win with two scoreless innings in the 10th and 11th. Mike Fetters took the loss, giving up the go-ahead run in the 11th. Slaton and Bones took no-decisions.

California, by winning three of four, are off to a solid start in the AL West. Milwaukee will have work to do by starting in a 1-3 hole.
