Hurst vs Berenyi
Cincinnati, behind a solid six innings from Bruce Berenyi, jumped out to a 4-1 lead after 4 innings. Berenyi himself helped with that lead, when he doubled in the bottom of the 4th scoring one. San Diego would get a run in the 6th and 7th. Paul Moskau came on to pitch the final three innings to pick up his 1st save. CINN 4-3

Cincinnati Johnny Bench RBI singled, scoring one in the bottom of the 1st. Joe Nolan connected on a two RBI double for the margin of victory. Tom Seaver pitched a complete game giving up 7 hits and one run. San Diego Ed Whitson also pitched a complete game with 2 earned runs on 5 hits but took the loss.

Down 2-1 in the bottom of the 7th, San Diego Tony Gwynn RBI single to tie the game. Two batters later, with the bases loaded Bip Roberts walked, scoring what would become the winning run. Mark Davis pitched the final two innings for his 2nd save of the season. SD 3-2
Game 4
@ San Diego
With the game tied at three in the bottom of the third, San Diego Chris James connected on a two run home run for the 5-3 lead. Cincinnati in the top of the 6th, failed to score on 2 hits and one walk. In the top of the 8th, they would fail to score after three walks when pitcher Mark Davis entered the game for the final out and saving the lead. Davis would pitch the 9th for his 3rd save of the season. SD 6-3
