Cubbies and Spos split

CHICAGO (August 22) --

Joe Pepitone
(2) went the opposite direction with a Bob McClure pitch leading off the bottom of the 11th to power the Cubs to a 4-3 win. The win was also the first KOD win for Larry Waddell. Waddell is a manager in training for the Cubbies this season. Pepi belted a 2-run homer in the 4th giving Chicago a 2-0 lead. Fergie Jenkins was pitching a no-hitter until an Andres Galarraga single with 1-out in the 8th. Herm Winningham doubled in 2 in the Montreal 8th. Tim Raines' (2) solo HR in the 9th put the 'Spos up 3-2, but Jose Cardenal plated PR Billy North on a force out in the B9 to send it to extras.

CHICAGO (August 23) --
Mitch Webster, Vance Law and Hubie Brooks all had RBI in the T10 to lift Montreal to a 7-4 win in another extra-inning affair on the North Side. Tim Burke (2-1) pitched 2 perfect innings in relief to post the W.

MONTREAL (August 24) --

Neal Heaton (1-1) was lights out on the mound for the Expos over 6 IP. Montreal built a 5-0 lead. The Cubs finally nicked Heaton for 2 runs in the 7th, but in the T8, Vance Law (1) highlighted a 4-run explosion for the visitors with a 3-run bomb. 'Spos won 9-2 going away.

MONTREAL (August 25) --
Milt Pappas (1-1) yielded a RBI single to Raines in the 1st. It was his only blemish in a complete-game effort. The "Mad Greek" scattered 5 hits, while fanning 7 and walking just 1 in a 4-1 Chicago win to even the series. The Cubs scored all they needed in the 3rd when Cardenal doubled in 2 and Billy Williams doubled in Cardenal.
